Wicks for Plant Waxes
Plant waxes, such as Rapeseed and Soy waxes, require far bigger wicks than paraffin wax candles, and often different wick types, as the braiding techniques and chemical treatments differ by application. The best wicks for Plant Wax candles tend to be slightly beige in colour (not bleached). Examples include:
- CL Series Wicks (Cotton & Linen)
- Stabilo Series Wicks (Cotton & Paper)
- TCR Series Wicks (Cotton & Paper)
- L Series Woodwicks
Wicks for Paraffin Candles
Paraffin candles, and hybrid wax candles, typically require smaller wicks than pure plant waxes. Most wicks used in paraffin candles are very white in appearance. Examples of the most commonly used wicks in paraffin candles include:
- LX Series Wicks
- VRL Series Wicks
- V Series Wicks (for difficult fragrances)
- PGS Series Wicks

Wooden Wicks
Wooden wicks are an alternative to traditional cotton wicks, bringing a different aesthetic to the finished product, and a slightly different user experience, delivering subtle crackling sounds with some fragrances. Wooden wicks can be used with both plant based and mineral (paraffin) wax systems as follows:
Paraffin Wax: When using wooden wicks with paraffin waxes, you should choose Single Ply wooden wicks. These are denoted with 'S'. Using Laminated wicks with paraffin will usually result in far too large a flame.
Plant Wax: When using wooden wicks with plant waxes, you should choose Laminated (Double Ply) wicks. These are denoted with an 'L'. As the name suggests, these wicks are laminated, meaning there are two strips of wood engineered together.
Plant waxes can use S Series (Single Ply) wooden wicks, but you will normally have to use two pieces, effectively making your own laminated wick. This is quite an advanced technique, but enables you to fine tune each formulation.
